Selecting your tinder
Tinder is a highly combustible substance which ignites with the slightest heat source. Tinder can turn into a first flame by carefully blowing. The heat source can be created by friction, sparks, a coal from a previous fire, sunlight, a lighter etc. Go to ‘Gadgets and tools’ to see what you can use to start a fire.
Knowing what different kind of materials you can use as tinder can be useful as you might not find the same materials in different places. All materials have different characteristics, they all respond differently to a heat source, and knowledge about this can work in your advantage.
I’ll explain several natural tinder sources below.
Preparing your tinder
Always make sure that your tinder is dry. You can collect your tinder in the rain but put it in your pocket or your hat and let it dry on your body. Before using your tinder it is best to pulverize it to make it fluffy and fine. This can be done by rubbing the material along each other or by using a sharp tool and rub it over the material.
By making a small nest in your tinder, the heat source can affect a greater surface to transfer heat. This nest also prevents the cooling of your heat source in case of a glowing ember or a first flame.
